Timid Kingfish

Post by scott__henning » Fri Mar 08, 2013 10:15 am

I was out fishing yesterday and came across a large school (possibly several schools) of kingies. It's the first time ive ever had the chance to try and get one down here in victoria, but try as I might they were not interested in anything I had to offer! I know kingfish can be hard to entice sometimes, but it was very frustrating!

I tried livebait (yakkas), dead chunks of bait (yakka, pilchard), surface poppers, hardbodied lures which i guess look like pilchards, deep divers, and knife jigs.

I did have 1 kingie follow up the knife jig but he didnt get it, so that was also annoying.

Anyway does anyone have any tips on what else I can try to get these kingies interested? I want to try live squid, but I have never caught a squid before so that is proving difficult.

Heading back out tomorrow I'll take some with me. Yes I was the same, as frustrating as it was it was very exciting, there were hundreds in the water all coming right up to the back of the boat

haha ill have the flying gaff ready!

just got a payrise today, so thought i'd celebrate with a new snapper rod. got a LOX iridium kingfish rod, might have to give it a flick to the kingies, maybe they will be so impressed with my new rod they will jump onto the hook!
