Simrad Tuna classic

Well last weekend, the Simratd Tuna classic was held in Apollo Bay. The previous year, it cancelled because of bad weather. This year there was one day of fishing, with fishing cancelled for the sunday, which meant an early return to Melbourne.

The plan was to leave early enough on Friday and launch the boat boat for a friday afternoon fish,

Before I left I saw a spare packet of wheel bearings on the shelf, but having just filled the bearing buddies with grease, decided I wouldn't need them and not needing the bearing I decided not to pack the tool kit either.

Coming down the mountain, a new noise started up, eventually decided to pull up and check it out and as we stop the bearing buddy pops off the right hand wheel. So the next was to drive very slowly until we found a safe place to stop and pull over. with the right hand wheel wobbling like a drunken sailor.

First trip into Apollo bay, I find a place that sell wheel bearings, thinking that they were holden bearings, get back to the trailer only to find, I needed more tools than I had on hand, back to Apollo bay, for a tool kit. Get the wheel off, put the new bearings in, the hub won't go one, the bearings were just a little too small, back to Apollo bay, just in time to catch the workshop as it was closing for the day, Get another set of bearings, which fortunaly fitted.

The next day we launched and on the way out, came across, 3 hump back whales, which we sat an watch for a while, then off for a day or towing the lures out the back, after a few hours of zilch, I decided to put our my home made teaser, and towed it around for while. I turned around to see my teaser behaving strangely, I pull it, and find I have half a teaser, 150lb wire trace had been cut, as if a pair of wire cutters were used,

Out of 25 boats for the Apollo bay comp only one boat hooked and landed a Tuna that weighed 101kg;s. Eveyone else was fishless.

The tuna were out front of the harbour on the Sunday, after the comp had been called off.
At which point we were driving up towards the freeway, right up until the drawbar on our boat trailer gave up the ghost.

Sounds eventful at least. Sometimes they are the lasting memories in years to come.

Wonder what got your lure though... mako?

I was very interested to read you had sighted 3 humpback whales. I was fishing the Apollo Bay Pier early Saturday morning and sighted a baby one about 100+ meters from the pier and had wondered where it's parents were..... sounds like they were keeping watch out in the deeper water offshore from the bay.

I figured there must have been a competition on... I saw all you guys blowing out the entrance at sun-up.
