connecting the suzuki to the lowrance with a NMEA cable, first issue was how to get the cable through the rubber bush on the motor and it turned out to be rather simple.

Still have to fed the cable through the bush on the hull, but that can be attended to a later date.

Now I will be able to tell how much fuel I am using and more importantly how much is left.

We left Melbourne and arrived in Portland at about 0930, bwent to the tackle shop, bought a few odds and ends. Launched the initial plan was to head towards Julia Percy but wound up heading to wards Cape Bridgewater and drew a blank. Only to get passed by a the biggest pod of dolphins I had ever seen, must have been at least 5 kilometers long, and they had the garnnets flying above them. What ever they were chasing we couldnt keep up as they headed east, with us going west.

Saturday saw us launching at 0600, and we headed south to 50 metres and then headed towards Julia Percy. Early on we saw a charter casting lures into a bust up and one lucky customer hooked up, there were about 5 boats surrounding the bust up and we left them to it, hoping to find our own school. Even trolling around the school would see them dive deep. We found out later the trick was to cut the motor and drift over them.

The distance we covered was 76 k, with about 36 litres of fuel used. For some reason the Lowrance being connected to the Motor would not give any fuel readings at all.

2 years ago I did the Australian Waters Qualification to be able to legally use my VHF radio. I upgraded my VHF to a unit which has a DSC button, which when pushed in an emergency gives your GPS co-ordinates out. But to use that function, a person needs to have MMSI number and to obtain one you need to provide proof of compentency. Well do you think I could find my original certificate.

So I contacted the trainer, and it finally arrived in the mail yesterday, so I scanned it and sent it to ASMA and today received my MMSI number, which has duly been entered into the VHF radio.

Hopefully I will never have to use it.
