Okuma Makaira reels

Looking at purchasing a few game reels and the Makaira 50 is one model I'm considering. Do any fellow members have these?

My mate has one lost 2 marlin to it when the drag locked up when he took it back they said it's a known problem they sent it away and had a screw replaced and locktited in been ok since. They have good warranty. I run tiagra 50's

Cheers Nude up how do you find the Tiagra 50s on school sized tuna? Is it a bit of overkill or ok? How often does the 2 speed lever drag become useful.

Unless you're specifically chasing barrels or swords, I'd just get a couple of Tiagra 30wlrsa and be done. They're lighter than a 50, still hold a decent amount of 24kg line and are a better all rounder

To be honest I have not used the two speed but I have not caught a tuna over 40kg caught marlin to over 200kg and still not used it. They are overkill on school fish but you don't have to lift the drag and b if you do encounter a barrel you are in with a shot

Thats true on the barrels it pays to be prepared the two speed is probably handy if deep dropping for swords.

I got rid of my makaira, they have no seal to stop water getting into the gears. Both mine and my mates malaira seized up day 2 in Exmouth.

Replaced with tiagras which are clearly superior
