I'm part of a game fishing club, I get points for each tagged fish for our club trophies.

The tagging program is run by the nsw fisheries, they supply the tags to clubs, and they get sent back to them for research purposes.

Only if you want to mate, from my understanding to get access to tags you have to be a club member.

Of the guys I fish with only one is in a club we only tag his marlin we just let the others go after swimming them to ensure they are ok after a few photos although some times if they are very green we don't get photos.
