Portland report
The forecast wasn't the best, but the sea was flat on wednesday so I launched and headed out to the 60 70 metre line trolling some skirts, busy looking for any working birds south of the rock.
Not a sight to be seen, but I was told that the tuna were south of the rock, any way, after a while I turned around and headed back to Portland, in to the teeth of the 35 Km/hr plus winds. This created the situation of the swell travelling in my direction and the wind and waves in the opposite. With the sun in my eyes it made it a bit hard to judge the oncoming waves.
However I decided to troll back so top speed was about 8 to 9 knots, even then it was a bit bumpy at times, but I am impressed the way the boat handled the waves.
It was disappointing not to hook up, but the main reason was to gain sea experience in the weather. More importantly I took the bung out and only a few drops of water came out.
But I really hate tinny bastards who hook up on their first trip. :Boxing: :tease:

Re: Portland report
That's hunting a barrel for ya.. many trips and not even a sniff. Good to get out there for experience though.
What lures did you use and how was your spread?
Cheers, Anth

Good to hear the bonding with your boat went well, but shame the barrells didn't play ball. Fair to say you didnt see any birds working, but did you sound up any bait and/or tuna at all?

We found tonnes of gannet action in the 50-60m depth directly south of the rock over the weekend, that's crazy that you didn't see anything! The rough weather can make it a bit harder to spot the birds from a distance I guess.

Re: Portland report
I sounded some bait balls closer to the rock, and I trolled around the area for a while before heading out deeper.Redhunter wrote:Good to hear the bonding with your boat went well, but shame the barrells didn't play ball. Re: Portland report
It handled the waves very well and I was impressed, I think a few others might have needed to change their underwear but it felt very comfortable.snapper hunter wrote:Nice boat, my mate had one
