i need to clarify something.
when bait fishing , is it best to stike on a nibble , or , wait till the fish have run with the bait before lifting the rod?
a mate who is an experienced bait/cod man used to strike early , but now sits and waits until the fish bends the rod over.
He states he now gets more hook ups.
Circle hooks have also been mentioned for better hook ups.
your thoughts everyone :?:
to strike on a nibble ???

Re: to strike on a nibble ???
It depends on which fish you are targetting?
In general, I tend to let the fish hook themselves. This is the case nearly all the time as I am currently using circle hooks.
If I am fishing for whiting with common baitholder hooks, I have more success striking on the first sign of a strong nibble.
When striking, always try to feel if the fish is still there in that split second.... you never want to pull the hooks out of the fishes mouth!

Re: to strike on a nibble ???
Fishing for trout, there are times when it is best to strike at first indication of a bite, and other times it is best to wait. Using mealworms or golden grubs, I had trout take them off the hook without barely moving the tip, and that was a nibble tip rod I was using.
So it really depends on the circumstances.

Hi Troutman,
There were some actions at Werribee South boat ramp lately, so take your son (Crazycod) there and have a go. Best to fish there at high tide. Caught some breams & mullets last 2 weeks.

A bad day of fishing is better than a good day of work.
