Flounder/Fish Spearing Queries

Post by denis barden » Tue May 01, 2018 3:47 pm

Has anyone Speared from a boat? It is legal as I rang Fisheries today
Has anybody speared any Flounder around St Leonards or Indented Heads?
When gars pop up is it best to spear them or tap them with a stick or catch in net?
Cheers Denis

We used to sit on front of the tinny and spear flounder...it's a lot easier than wading and you don't have to worry about stepping on a ray or stabbing your mates foot. We used to stun the Gars by whacking them with the spear...nearly impossible to spear them. No idea on the legalities of it, but you can legally gaff fish from the boat & it's a similar concept.

When i go floundering I take my kids and they take a little net each to catch the gars and mullet in whilst wearing headlights. We missed to many trying to whack them on the back ..
I take the spear with an underwater light.
We all have a ball.
Never done it from a boat. Just wading up to waist deep usually on crissy an easter holidays.

Denis I have caught flounder in the past at portarlington not from a boat though just wading. Try the small ramp at the bottom of fairfax st and wade the sand flats on the right. Needs to be a flat night but for best visibility.

I have just picked up a couple of lights from tuna tube to give at a crack at portarlington myself. There is plenty of shallow sand banks around there.
