At leasy you wont be pissed off if you break a 99 cent rod over the other.
I think it more comes down to rigs, bait, and technique

He uses lures to catch them mate. You need very sensitive rods tgat can throw jigheads weighing couple grams. So its not easily done. But really no need for 1200$ outfit tbh but whatever floats your boat

Bait was ment to include soft plastics also.
Ive had some good 2 to 4kg rods over the years of ebay that i used for casting hard bodies for trout and flicking mr twisters of mcgregors street peir.

the plastics and jigheads they use are quite small. So if the cheap rods can tbrow them easily then that's more than enough.
I certainly don't see why a bream rod cant be used tbh.

A number of the higher end bream rods from Japan actually have an Ajing pedigree. I’ve dropped a quite a few bucks on bream gear, even though I could just as easily catch them on a Kmart rod and frozen prawn. In no position to judge someone if they want to do the same for Yakkas. Hell, it could even be fun...

Nothing different to using a $1200 outfit for squid. I certainly dont think its necessary but if thats what they have fun doing then so be it.

I am a believer of getting good gear (note not expensive. But good. But generally good also means more $$$)
Buy what you can afford.

Just last week my cousin who took a break from fiahing for a few years has decided to get back into it.
He purchased the rovex squid rod and sienna reel. Cheap and under $100 for the combo. But nowhere near light as my base model emeraldas combo.
So there is a difference...


Now to get back on topic.
Mackeral still going strong according to my cousin fishing flinders. Usual locals getting them on fresh pilchard slivers.
