What salt water critter fights like a wet rag?!!!!

Hi
Just returned from Rosebud and did a bit of bait fishing from Rosebud Jetty - where the locals say isn't too flash because there is only sand there and no reef or weed beds. My internet has been offline so I couldn't ask for any advice but just got some bait (frozen baby squid/octopus) from a local tackle store. Just wanted to take my niece's 5 yr old son fishing. We didn't have any luck but several times when retrieving the bait just to check it I noticed some dead weight being dragged along. Weed I assumed but then all of a sudden the weight would drop off. I wondered if it was perhaps a crab just hanging on to the bait trying to claim it and then releasing it as it could not get hooked?

Could be starfish or crabs. Rosebud pier can produce a variety of fish though, from salmon to garfish to squid. If I we had of known you were down that way I think a few members from here could have swung by to offer advice.
As long as you had an enjoyable time, maybe next time we can help out more
