Dusky Morwong (Butterfish)

Post by Fish-Hunter » Tue Sep 22, 2015 7:34 pm

I recently caught a Dusky Morwong (Butterfish), my second in over 20yrs. These fish rarely take baited hooks, i caught it by sight. It was feeding in the shallows, when i presented a mussel in front of it & it checked it over several times, then i seen the mussel disappear & loaded my rod "hook up" the fight was strong, these fish are great fighters.

Nice fish. I was actually going to ask about 'butterfish' because I see it from time to time in fish and chip shops but never known what species it referred to here. For some reason I thought it referred to Jewfish in South Australia but I have no idea if that is actually the case.
2015/16 Fisting Victoria Species comp total: 289cm
Brown Trout: 37cm
Flathead: 51cm; Squid: 36cm; Australian Salmon: 51cm; Snapper 46cm; Silver Trevally 23cm; KGW: 45cm

On light gear it put up a great fight, I think the Butterfish sold at fish shops is possibly not the same ?
