hmm ..... to leave any animal stuck in a confinement trap for days at a time, I'd be very surprised if that's legal. Certainly not humane IMO.DougieK wrote:

Re: Any proper way to catch eels?
I've used a small bag of tuna oil and a hoop net or prawn net when I've gone for them in freshwater!

To find a fish
You do the miles.
Catch the fish
and earn the smiles.
Lord, allow me to catch a fish, so large that even I,when speaking of it afterwards.........May have no need to lie !!!

Re: Any proper way to catch eels?
As far as I know, eels only breed far out at sea .... so while an older eel might get trapped in a dam or something and can't get back to salt water, they all start life at sea then migrate to fresh water ....Texas wrote:

Re: Any proper way to catch eels?
Their life cycle is fascinating Gra ...... there's a lot of information readily available (on the google machine) on both short and long fins. They can travel vast distances over land making their way from water source to water source on their way back to the ocean to spawn. One evening on dusk, night fishing for Blackies and Crays, I had one about two ft long slither past me in the damp grass, making it's way from one water hole to the next.Texas wrote:You fair dinkum..an eel from a dam could end up in the sea ????Russ wrote:Same creature .......... just at a different stage of maturity.Texas wrote:Fresh or salt water ???

Ha! Roadkill hedgehog tied to a bridge and use a trident spear. That's how we use to do it in NZ.skuxliss wrote:We use to catch them on sausages as bait in NZ, we use to go to the local creek and rivers and use boiled sausages as bait on hand lines. Not sure if it'll work here though
Then take them to the pub and sell them to to the locals for a 6 pack. All of 12 years old.
