I've got quite a few recently off rock ledges over deep water bang on dawn.

Different spots, Red Point/Cape Woolamai and Tongue Point/Wilsons Prom.

All fish on a silver halco twister within 45 minutes of dawn.

Will they eat bait sitting on or close to the bottom or does it need to be suspended higher in the column?

Don't give them much chance to think. The ones I've caught have fallen to a white plastic twitched aggressively past their noses. If I slowed down and let them follow, they wouldn't strike and would ignore that lure from then on

I've seen them caught in the Geelong area on lures. Also came across some guys one night that were driving up and down looking for them, then chucking fishy bait with wire trace, said they'd done well on them.
