Fishing in the bay and rivers, 1875

Post by bilby » Sat Nov 15, 2014 8:53 am

I just found this fascinating article published in the Melbourne newspaper, The Argus, from 1875:

http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/11512444" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Interesting to see the reference to the Werribee and Little River as bream spots. The Werribee is still popular, of course, but how many have fished Little River for bream recently? If anyone has fished it landbased, I'd be interested to know how you gain access.

Very interesting question.

I'm looking forward to reading replies (if I remember right, from Altona to Little River there is a couple of small creeks as well)

A wonderful read, thank you bilby for the post. I have found a lot of very interesting stuff regarding Eppalock weir during construction and upgrading on the Trove site. Cheers muzza43.

The Argus, from 1875: even back then he had concerns with netting.

Acess to little river is by boat launch at point wilson and go in the mouth but a small boat is a must is shallow and some times you need to drag the boat over shallow area to get in . A bird watching pass can be obtained from board of works to gain entry to the farm but not sure if would be frowned on if u were caught fishing when ment to be bird watching . Not t mention the runoff from the **** farm that is ment to be clean water that is pored into the river no way i would eat a fish from there , but is lots of very big bream in there well worth the effort for catch and release.

I wonder if you can walk in from somewhere. I've driven over it on the way to Geetown many times and often wondered.
