I've just got a Trout Rod, 3000 Reel, 6pound line 2/4kg rod. Then got a heavy boat rod, with a 6000 reel with 20lb braid. Then just my 5/6wt Fly rod.

I suppose its like having a heap of different socket/spanner sets. Quite often you need 2 of the same tool.

Because we can.

And because there is soooo many choices.
I'm looking for a new combo at present - just a general purpose rod/reel - and there are so many options. Can be daunting at times.

Quite simply you can't do some things with the wrong gear. The three rods i actually use (I have about a dozen) are my 1-3kg spinner, my 902 spinner and my 13 8-15kg spinner.

Spinning a surf beach with trout gear just isn't going to work, the same as trying to precision cast a 3g inline spinner in a tiny mountain stream with a freaking salmon stick.

You need a long rod to fish a beach but it will be nearly impossible to use in a boat.

I personally think with 4 rods you can cover pretty much any kind of fishing you want to do land based. A 1-3kg spinner, a 3-6kg spinner both in 7 foot rods. A 902 for surf spinning and a longer heavier rod for soaking big baits and or rock fishing.

Fishing is like golf, always buying more clubs that make you hit it longer or make the game easier, and the fitness industry with the massive ammount of near useless supplements...

That being said...you still need a putter a wedge and a driver (or fairway wood/long iron)

So I think it makes perfect sense to have a surf rod, a light soft plastics rod and a snapper rod, and then if your going for some pelagics or whatever you will need another rod/reel again.

But for the most part I think a 6'6 rod, 3-6kg with 12lb+ braid and a 3000 sized reel covers alot of species.

this is pretty much what i have. a surf rod, a spin rod and a couple of snapper style rods but then again im just a weekend fisherman. if i was serious and chasing species all the time then i'd definitely have a stack of specific rods

Horses for courses, skull dragging reddies or trout on cod gear would take a bit of the sport out of it.
