Giant blue fin tuna fetch heaps on the japanese market, they are endangered and there are strict commercial quotas in place.

Supply and demand. Blue fin tuna is ranked as one of the highest delicacy for sushi in Japan, hence they willing to pay high dollar for it. Plus with strict commercial quotas like poodoo mentioned, small supply and high demand will drives up the prices.

Still, I've watched quiet a few shows and series on the Blue Fin, to me that doesn't look like its worth that much, not even close. Especially if it's been dead for a while. The price per pound in the Japanese market is based on quality of meat, colour, texture and fat (all which deteriorate rapidly once the species dies & in this case surfaces and cooks under the sun)..

Exactly.

And the 1.8m probably comes a made up street price of each portion in the most expensive high end place rather than market price.

A mint large blue fin is worth typically $1000 to $10,000

Well. Maybe it is specific new season special blue fin... Especially if they been labelled as the best tuna out of the whole harvest. I remember i read the news about 1st tray of mango for the season fetched for $30,000 in Sydney. That i think is stupid. But people buy for sentimental values
