Can’t go wrong with the OC or D shimanos mate. Personally I’d go 6000’s but 4000’s will still work.
The 6000D is bulky and the 4000D looks a little small I have both, I've always wondered why they didn't release a 5000 which is a perfect size for snapper or surf...
He who has the most fishing rods WINS ! :ts:

I agree. I had 2 Penn Captiva 5000 (given to nephews) and are just the right size , , , , not overkill and not questionably small. Nieces, Nephews and my kids use them often. That is when the "put down" ABU 6500 doesn't peel off :-D

Penn do a few in the 5000 range. Not basic reels but also not fancy shmancy either , , , , but robus :a_goodjob:

Cheers, Bug 5000

We purchased a boat earlier this year and my son and I have been enjoying catching squid and flathead. With snapper season approaching, it is time to invest in some snapper gear. I would appreciate peoples recommendations of suitable reels for PPB, particularly if a bait runner style of reel is necessary or advantageous. I would prefer a good quality robust reel, that is easy to maintain and reasonably prices as I need 4 of them. I am currently favouring the Shimano D 4000 baitrunner or Daiwa BG 4000.

Thanks
Welcome Schwartzy i have no Idea how much you want to spend but a 3000 sized reel would be ok for fishing light but the 4000 will be better for starting off. Something like a baitrunner will be fine or something like a nasci or stradic it depends on how much you want to spend really.

Mattblack why mono?
Don't like braid?
Kids & multiple lines in the water are a recipe for disaster...braid is a bastard to untangle & is also harder to try knots if your just starting out. Fibreglass rods are more robust and baitrunners make setting the correct drag pressures a breeze.
For bait fishing, my favourite snapper combo is the 6-10kg/7ft Ugly Stik with a Shimano Baitrunner OC 6000 with 20lb Maxima mono.
I find in shallow Westernport mono is fine if I am using braid I tie a 5m wind on so theres a bit of stretch in the line. Over time if people are serious about fishing it pays to learn good knots for braid to mono but as a starter mono is fine.

Thanks everyone for valuable feedback. Some additional information might be helpful. Whilst I do not have a budget, I am looking for good value. I think $150 is reasonable. I am shocked at what some people are prepared to pay for a quality reel, but I do wonder how much is R&D and quality and how much is marketing and hype. The reels will be paired with a couple of 4-8 kg UglyStiks, I purchased on sale from Anaconda. They were almost giving them away. I do not think a larger or heavier reel will be out of place. I also have a couple of Veritas 4-8 kg rods, also purchased on sale, and it would be a shame not to pair them with a light weight reel.

I last fished PPB with my dad over 30 years ago. So it has been a while between fishing trips! I still have my reel from the day, a Diawa 7000x. Diawa and made in Japan stood for quality back then and I am tempted to buy Daiwa for the nostalgia value.

The boat is stored on the peninsula and so both PPB and WP are options.

If you’re a Daiwa man the BG4000 is perfect, a little over your budget though
The Shimano baitrunner 6000 OC is on sale through Anaconda Club for $149 atm.. rock solid reliable reels and I’ve always found the baitrunner function useful off the boat
