What are the best baits for pinkies?

Pinkies (Snappers) are my favourite fish to catch. I recently went to Mornington Pier and caught a few pinkies, and one was 1 centimetre below the legal limit. I used Pilchards and Pipi. Maybe next time I should use squid? Any other bait recommendations for Snappers are very welcome.

Caught pinkies with a whole range of baits including pillies, squid, white bait, bluebait, pippies, chicken, mackerel, mussels, salmon and probably a few more I have forgotten

main snapper bait I use are squid strips and pilchards
Have caught snapper on slimies fillets, and salmon chunks also

Pinkies that size generally eat everything I think. Though, if I would target them I'd use chicken/squid/pipi.
