Snapper Fishing After Heavy Rain

Post by TheGreatestGoat » Fri Dec 01, 2017 7:50 am

So given we're in for a bucket load over the next few days, thought it would be a good time to start a discussion on fishing after a big pour.

On the one hand I'm thinking that food will push out from the river systems and the water discoloration in close will give the snapper cover to come in a feed in the shallower water? On the other hand I've read they'll hang out deep where the salinity levels are closer to normal

Where do you think the snapper will be with all this fresh water pushing in to the bay? Anyone got any theories or proven hypothesis from their experience?

Cheers,
Goat

I'd also like to know how long after a big rain before the fish have no traces of E.Coli and faecal matter.

Just be wary of floating logs in westernport. Caught good fish after heavy rain.

I don't have too much experience with Snapper, my first season but caught a few, with this sh*t weather upon us for what looks to be 6/7 days, I'd imagine it will do some good. A lot of rain and heavy winds and what looks to be a rising barometer when it mostly finishes. A lot of fish like to congregate around freshwater systems in the bays like the mouth of the Yarra, in western port the upper reaches of the top end, maybe in close and shallower could be better not sure

It must be remembered that the dirty fresh water will float on top of the salt water. Take the Patterson River for example, the fresh will push the salt water towards the Railway bridge and that is where the bream will be.

One of the best landbased sessions, I had was fishing off the end of Frankston pier and could not see the bottom, even ran out of bait.

Western Port will be dirty and it will take a few tide changes before it is able to clear.
