Do you sit and wait?

Postby Wolly Bugger » Sat Nov 11, 2017 7:36 pm

Over the last few days, my cousin in his boat, would head out and pick a spot and just wait for the bite in Western Port, although he didn't catch his bag limit they did fairly well, just picking a spot and sitting and waiting.

On Friday I hit western Port around buoy 29 where a few boats were already sitting at anchor, I assume they were waiting, in the mean time I head up towards buoy 31 looking for likely signs, after finding none, I dropped the pick and sat and waited.

We lost one, hooked a snapper about 43 cms and a nice size flathead.

So what are the preferences, sitting and waiting or trying to sound up the fish. Last year in PPB I managed to eventually find a few on the sounder, but a few days were spent with no arches showing on the sounder.

For gummy and snapper, I sit and wait on the + or - flow either side of slack, at what I think is the right place for the flow and tide.
For Ting, I move after 20 min.

If i find a bit of interesting grownd on the sounder but no fish marks ill give it a try.
For snapper i normally go over old spots that have produced in the past ill try there

If its good weather ill for snapper in peak season ill sound around till i find some marks on the sounder.

For gummys i just go by tides amd ground curveture

In regards to snapper, I havent sounded any fish in the last 4 trips so I've had to resort to finding structure & making camp....so far the success rate is 50/50. After a couple of hours of burning fuel & patience, I figure its better to have a line in the water & hope something swims past.

That area off Hastings the last week has fished better along with Rhyll.

Always try and sound fish. You can be sitting in an area the size of the MCG with no fish beneath the boat otherwise.

I go to known spots and wait if fishing first light, while waiting I watch people sounding and wasting peak time cruising about without a bait in the water.

Sound around before peak times find areas holding fish then back myself in. Never park on a mark.
