Main issue with running 2500 n n light 2/4 ridis when snapper fishing often get gumbos , n light combo is no match for a decent gumbo imo

Looks like the majority of you would go with a 4000 reel, 4-7kg rod & 20lb braid.

I prefer using mono in PPB by a longshot as typically braid floats more and seeing as PPB has barely any current I end up with tangles galore or even just baits not hitting the desired areas. Also fishing out of the rod holders the added sensitivity of braid is negated for me.
Cheers,
Ham.

I snapped a "4-8kg" Jarvis walker rod the other day on way I assume was a big gumbo the other day. Had a 4000Aernos reel which seemed to do alright but it was actually the hook that pulled. Luckily a mate got me a nice 8-15kg Penn Reload and a 560Slammer for my bday (stoked). Looks like I'll be keeping the 4000 on my squid rod.

Ps. I know 8-15kg might be overkill but I plan to use it in WPB and for when I decide to start targeting gumbos

Can use 8 to 15kg for snapper in ppb mite be less sensative to bites so you have trouble with smsll flathead but you use what you got rite.
Just dont have to worry about it breaking now lol

I pretty much agree with Cobby and use the same gear as I use for Westernport Whiting - Penn 260 reel on a 6 kg rod - that of cause is up around the lower tide flow areas not the southern part of the bay
I'm sure most snapper in the northern parts of the bay could be caught on 6 lb - just setting the hook is a lot harder with lighter line

first off there is no tide flow to assist the fish - it's a big sandy dessert out there and nothing to get cut off on and of cause snapper run out of steam pretty quickly anyway

I see some say they use 30 lb braid - are you expecting SBT or Marlin as by catch
My kayak PBs
Gummy shark 128 Cm - Elephant fish 85 Cm - Snapper 91 Cm - KG Whiting 49 Cm - Flathead 55 Cm - Garfish 47 Cm - Silver Trevally 40 Cm - Long Tail Tuna 86 Cm - snook 64 Cm - Couta 71 Cm - Sth Calamari 44 Cm hood - Cobia 117 cm

just to chime in.
the snapper outfits i got (4-7kg 6"6 graphite rod and shimano sienna 4000 with 30lb braid) landed a decent sized 7giller few days ago.

using braid on the graphite outfits is a no brainer for me as the fight is a lot more fun as you feel all the headshakes and lunges properly, in mono lots of them are absorbed in line stretch.
the drawback is running too many rods and having tangles

After reading everyone's opinion I bought a Daiwa Generation Black 701HFS Humphead (5-9kg) and matched it with a Shimano Sustain 4000....only advice I didn't take was loading the reel with braid and spooled it with 16lb mono.
Thanks for all the advice, it's fast becoming my favourite as it feels great & it's perfect for the top of Port Phillip....haven't caught anything huge on it yet, but I'm extremely confident it could.

That would be my preffered Rod for Heavy lure us, so plenty of grunt available when loaded with bait. should have no issues dragging them in with that.
i actually looked at that rod for some smaller kings and mulloway, but got a heavier rod in the end for light offshore work (ns amped offshore)
