White or white with red head are the only ones that have worked for me at the top of the bay. I have also been able to catch them on a prong with a silver whiting but never with pilchards.

Buy them when on special, I pay no more $12 for them. Have 3 or 4 in the tackle cupboard at the moment.

Squid are colour blind.
Appreciate we could have a whole discussion on shades of grey but the more I squid fish (at least once a week 52 weeks a year) the more I’m convinced that squid jig colour is a marketing scam.
From my experience, if they are “on” they will hit any $1 jig regardless of colour. If they are shy, it comes down to jig size, sink rate and the action applied.
And the more the cloth is damaged, the better the jig works!

The action. Sink rate are better on the more expensive jogs. Hence why your paying more.
Colours. Some brands have some defenote colours that produce. Try switch to the same brand in same size but different colour and no dice...
All depends on the day.
Ive had them go for one colour only. And bag out on that one colour. Yet anything else in similar colours and same size got ignored.
The 14t or similar variants is a must have ricky

Squid have the largest eyes and have very good eye sight. They can see shades of colour and shapes very well much better than other fish.

They can also see polarized light which is why the UV jigs like the 14T work so well.

The yamashita NAEBA works well for me. Though this could also be because I had a good session the first time I used one, so now always have one out when squid fishing.

The yamashita RWKM got me 6 out of 8 squid today
