Im surprised nobody has actually said why thinner braid (or less lb) is actually better so here you go.

1. Casting distance!
This is the #1 advantage of going thinner. Thinner braid will cast further especially if you are using light jigs. 10lb vs 20lb will get you around 20% more casting distance. There's a YouTube video somewhere about this.

2. Sensitivity - to feel all those little bites and the bottom
But not really that noticeable between 20lb and 10lb in my opinion. Unless you're targeting really small fish.

3. Amount of line on your spool
The thinner the line, the more you can fit on your reel.

The advantages of thicker braid:
1. Toughness
For when you need to fight bigger fish, or cast heavier lures. It also gives you that extra bit of confidence that you can pull a fish away from structure. Note I've never snapped my 10lb line before, the 15lb leader always breaks first.

2. Less tangles/wind knots
Thicker line is easier to manage. Have you ever tried to untangle 2lb line vs a knot in a rope? Wind knots are usually game over with very thin braid. Especially for the beginner.

When choosing braid, go with the thinnest braid you're comfortable with. For the average person 10lb is a good balance between casting distance, strength and line management. Choose good brands, because the good ones are thinner for any given strength. And the bad ones tangle really easily.
