20 lb Vanish Flourocarbon Leader - Breaking by hand?

Post by BigBad64 » Wed Sep 27, 2017 1:09 pm

Hi all,
trying to tie an FG knot (trying being the operative word), 20 lb braid to 20 lb Vanish Flourocarbon Leader.

When I went to cinch the knot down, the leader broke. Thought it must have been a weak bit of leader with some fault, but pulled more leader off the spool and tried pulling on it 3-4 times, broke every time. :(

I'm of average middle-aged strength, definitely nothing special. I'm using gloves to pull on the line to save my hands.

Should I be able to break 20 lb leader by hand, or is it no good?

It does what its brand name says "Vanishes"
Maybe you got a badly stored one where its integrity has been compromised, take it back to the shop and swap for a different brand. Although ive heard of some flurocarbons having brittle effects, not sure why

I burnt a stack of the stuff on the last cod trip. Will not buy it again. It just seems soft.

You don't lubricate when tightening an fg. The fg works because the braid bites into the mono/fluoro - lubricating only hinders this.

correct..
This could also be the reason why the gsoul X8 braid i have in 0.6pe keeps breaking at the FG knot leader end, braid is so thin and is heavy breaking strain causes the leader to snap at the knot, only happens with that braid for me

also vanish is known to break randomly which is why i stopped using them

omg! this makes sense ! I thought I was the only one struggling with Vanish , Vanishing on me when tying the knots.
I stick to Black Magic now, my go to for all breaking strengths

I have a large spool of it which has not had any issues. You could have copped a bad batch though. If you take it back to the store and demonstrate it breaking they should be happy to change it over.
