Spooling TLD25's

Post by yepi'mon » Mon Mar 20, 2017 11:07 am

Hi Guys

Over the weekend I picked up a couple of new TLD25's/Shimano Backbone 15kg combos at a ridiculous price. The guy who I got them off also gave me a 1200m spool of Berkley Big Game Mono line (15kg) that he was going to put on there. You can see the same combo here: http://www.fishingtackleshop.com.au/pro ... e-rod.html

Now I am completely new to these kinds of reels and rods but am I looking at going for some bigger targets like kingfish and tuna (hopefully not to big).

My question is, do you think I should use the mono line or go for something else of a different weight rating or even braid?

Thanks in advance fisho's :water:

15kg mono is fine, I've just spooled mine with it and it takes around 600m.

The braid/mono debate is a personal preference I reckon...I have both mine loaded with mono. If using braid however, I would be top-shotting it. Unles you're prepared to be caughing up for over 600yds...a lot of which won't see daylight on most occasions.

Just my preference though.

Cheers Ian

The issue with braid, is that it digs in and will snap and cause knots and just be a pita, if it is not spooled tight and kept tight.
Mono is more forgiving.

Spot on Brett we lost a marlin last year on spin gear because the braid was not put on tight it cut into the remaining braid on the spool with the high tension , line was recovered covering where the braid had dug in when the fish went on a screaming run when it got to where the braid had dug in ping the braid snapped.
My personal choice is mono especially if using a roller tipped rod. My mates sometimes use Dacron then top shot with mono to cut costs but these guys respool regularly.

I just christened a couple of overheads on the weekend.....they aren't as easy as an egg-beater that's for sure. Bloody glad I had mono on them as I had a lot of line on the ground a couple of times and braid would have been awful to untangle.
P.S. For the record...No Marlin or Tuna off Flinders!

Cheers gents, based on your suggestions I think I'll just spool it up with the 15kg mono that I have sitting there. Will be first time using overheads so probably a good line to learn on!

Now to find something to catch with it .....
