Wholsale purchase of fishing tackle.

Post by Mutley and Scruffy » Wed May 18, 2016 10:14 am

Hi all
My mate sells bait from his house and does rather well. He is thinking of stocking some tackle lines, mainly hooks, sinkers and some line and in smaller quantities. Sinkers he intends on making himself. He asked me if I knew anything regarding the following.

About buying these products from Aus distributors. My initial thought was...not feasible as from what he has said, he would not want to spend the initial outlay as I would assume you would have to buy excessive amounts! Or if you could get smaller amounts, then price wise they would still be rather expensive. So, do you have to buy in bulk? If I was doing it, I would go local, failing that, I likely wouldn't do it.

But he is not me! As an alternative to pursuing local distributors, purchasing hooks from ebay...and then reselling them. Seems to be a more viable option he would take. I did a search here knowing there was a thread somewhere with links to reputable ebay sites that sell hooks...I couldn't find it! Anyone have a link to a good site if that is the path he chooses?
Thanks in advance.
Jim

I think you pretty much need to find a market that's not currently saturated by Australian retailers or supplied efficiently by overseas shops. Good examples of guys doing this are JS with his Century rods and Busted fishing with specialised products and lines.

I think the market for standard gear is going to be very very hard to penetrate given the competition.

Good points Doug. I should have mentioned, his intentions are just to have a small business. As in, keep his day job, if he earns $100 a month on tackle sales, on top of his bait sales...he would be happy. Hence the reason why he would not want to buy in bulk. Some of his current customers ask if by chance he has 'this or that'. In his location, often they are on the way to the Murray. He hopes he may get some impulse sales.

Impulse buys I think he'd be better off stocking a small amount of high quality gear. Known fish catchers for the area. If I was doing it I'd personally grey import quality gear from overseas and sell it at or slightly less than tackle store prices here. Youd get both the impulse buyers and probably some return buyers for the gear alone. Hooks, line, leader, it's all available cheap from Japan. You'd never make a business out of it but I reckon you could get a small monthly income off it. Not to mention if you ever get out of it by only stocking quality stuff you'll be able to get rid of it easily enough.

I reckon it would work given his location.Hooks, line, swivels & sinkers stuff that goes with bait fishing would probably be the easiest to start off with.Maybe a few shrimp & cray net's as well. Buy a box of ox heart's & ox livers from the abb's,put them in bag's & freeze them, then sell them off for 4 times what you paid for them as cray bait.Works for some butchers i know

Yep, I reckon this would be the way to go. Using Ducky's idea of importing cheaper stuff.

Don't go to big or stock heaps of stuff, just the basics for the local area and type of fishing, should earn some extra beer money easily enough,

Maybe even a good quality dearer option, and a low quality cheaper option for the weekenders that have forgotten something. Its very easy to just import things direct from china in small quantities these days.

Eidt: but yeah, I would just be thinking, what gear would I need if I was going fishing in XYZ location, and just stock those items

Or could buy stuff cheap in bulk and set up a website and resell it online if he has trouble with turn over
