Recommendations for fluoro mainline.

Post by Rod Bender » Sun Jun 24, 2012 11:53 am

Hi,
Was wondering if anyone can recommend a brand of fluorocarbon that can be used as mainline? Is it as simple as choosing a brand that has a 100 metre spool as opposed to some which just come in 20 metre spools? I want to try some light breaking strain fluoro in freshwater.
thanks

Do you use it for bait fishing or lure casting? I tried it when it first came out and found that with casting light lures my distance achieved reduced so I stopped using it. As it is a denser material than mono it did not cast as far. On saying that all fluoros may be the same - more suitable for casting heavier weights. Or I just 'bite the bullet' and don't cast as far or use heavier lures!

Most of my fishing is baitfishing, although I have been using it recently for squid casting jigs and also the salmon on metal lures and found it great for the casting distance. Though most of the time this is in the boat which you don't need to cast quite as far. I think you should bite the bullet and see how it goes for you as I am a happy user :)

Good luck!

I wouldn't use fluoro as a mainline, for a couple of reasons main 1 being it has a horrible memory and will end up taking the shape of the spool it's loaded on and 2 the price.

Load you reel with normal mono or a light braid and then use a 1m length of fluoro, see how it goes.

Fluoro is invisible to fish in clean/clear water

does that mean you can use heavier line on more timid fish or does it increase the catch rate

This is what I do now. Just want to have one rod loaded with fluoro for finesse fishing - and not have to bother retying leaders as I have a habit of loosing lures!!!!!

Fluorocarbon is overrated if you ask me. I havent had caught more fish using rather than plain leader.
