What Lb braid?
How do u decide what pound braid you are going to use? What are the advantages using as light as possible rather than beefing up the pound rateing?

Re: What Lb braid?
lighter braid generally casts much further, has less resistance against wind and wave, increases sensitivity to the lure, and increases the risk of busting off which bumps the adrenaline up. downsides are fiddly to tie knots, low abrasion resistance, possibly worse wind knots.

Re: What Lb braid?
I Look at the diameter of the braid rather than the breaking strain. Same advantages as listed by basti (except busting off lol).
Higher quality braid you can get thinner than lower quality for the same breaking strain, but you'll pay for it.
I have 0.4 PE braid on my finesse outfit and it's like fishing spider silk - beautiful. Breaking strain wise I only worry about the leader

Re: What Lb braid?
Casting a super high quality braid (i'm using 20lb ygk atm) is massively different to casting a medium quality 20lb like powerpro or fins.
Doing most of my fishing off the beach or rocks, casting range is quite important, If i can cast 10% further (it's more than that) with my good braid, not only will i cover more ground but my lure will also spend 10% more time in the water, giving me a better chance at hooking a passing fish.
It's not necessary, but god damn it's nice.

Re: What Lb braid?
My only experience in high quality braid is with the YGK that poodoo recommended so everything else is just someone elses opinion that i'm repeating. SAS seems to have an excellent reputation, but this question is probably better directed at someone with first hand experience.
The only thing with YGK is knots. Your knots have to be very technical or it's so thin the fluro leader snaps. I've been using the Slim Beauty for a long time and will always recommend it cos it's sooooo much easier to tie, but have switched to the FG since using the very thin braid.

In the mid range stuff, Power Pro, Sufix, + Fins seems to be pretty goodpwalnuts wrote:Which other brands are good Dougie? I'm guessing all the Japanese stuff...

Re: What Lb braid?
Dougie. Fg knot isn't the most ideal for thin braid it will bite into the leader and break it. Happened to me with the ygk... ( 8lb leader. Caught In a snag and came back with it broken at the knot with leadder missing) So you might be ok)
The fg is a jigging knot where 50lb mainline and 100lb leaders are the norm.
For the op.. For casting duties cheap braid is like rope. Expensive braid is like sewing thread.
Take your pick..
Again. You have to find the right thickness which will give you the best of both worlds but still be able to land your target fish.
For a beginner. I would suggest 12lb sunline super pe.

Re: What Lb braid?
I have the following lb on my setups
- 2000 sized reel - 6lb suffix 8 strand braid - used for primarily for lure / plastics / hardbodies - not too bad, but a little weak
- 2500 sized reel - 25lb ygk g-soul upgrade pe x8 (about the thickness of 10lb powerpro) - used for squid fishing, general pier work, bait fishing - a bit rough but has lasted 2 yrs on the spool and not lost that much strength
- 4000 sized reel - 30lb daiwa tournament accudepth hyper pe (about the thickness of 15lb powerpro) - used for surf spinning, fishing off the rocks - very smooth braid, but doesn't last very long and frays
- 6000 sized reel - 30lb powerpro original - used for beach fishing for larger stuff - rough, but i don't use it too often so is ok for the use case
The only 4 strand braid i have left is the powerpro and will probably replace that when it is up, but there is 300 metres there atm.
Some of the other japanese pe braids to look at are varivas, uniticka, megabass and some daiwa / shimano specialist braids.
If i was looking for an all round general purpose braid probably somewhere in the 10 - 12 lb thickness would be what i look at.

If you want affordable quality braid then unitika light shore game is worth a look. I run 0.8PE/10lb on a caldia 2506.
