Re: How old is too old for line?
I replace the line (4lb mono) on my reels every two weeks during the trout season. Mainly because I'm in a river three to four times a week covering some two kilometers of river each trip.
The continual casting and retrieving plus the stress put on the line with catching trout is the reason i do this. But if I wasn't continually fishing I would still probably change it once every three to four months as there is nothing worse than losing a good size fish due to poor line quality. Still it can depend on what type of fishing you do, salt or fresh water, fishing for large fish or even small fish. Line will eventually weaken with use. Just my thoughts on it anyway..
cheers

I replace the line on my handlines every 2 years or earlier if it looks frayed.

mono line is cheap enough nowadays to replace every season. sunlight (UV in the sunlight mainly) is what kills it.

Re: How old is too old for line?
i would think 3/4 of the line on a reel is brand new, never used... how often do you ever get close to being spooled..??
so if you wish.. you might cut off 50ft of the line.. then despool it.. then run it onto another spool.. then run it back onto you reel.. so it turn the older used line end to the start of the reel.. and you have the newer never used end back to hook end..
saves a bit of money... but other wise depending how much i've been fishing, and the care... every 2 to 4years i'd change line.

When it starts to wear out. Every year or three depending on how much you use it.
