PE rating

Post by mazman » Tue Jan 13, 2015 8:45 pm

Hey guys i'm looking for some help regarding the PE rating system. I understand that it is a measure of the diameter of the line but what i can't find is a chart or an equation or just something so I can work out how thick powerpro or any other line rated in lb/mm is in PE, or how thick a PE line is in mm. I wanted to know this just to make it easier to compare lines. Also is the PE system linear ie. PE.2 is twice as thick as PE.1.
Thanks for any help

Cheers Alex

Found this if it makes any sense

PE 0.6 – 0.128mm
PE 0.8 – 0.148mm
PE 1 – 0.165mm
PE 1.2 – 0.185mm
PE 1.5 – 0.205mm
PE 1.7 – 0.218mm
PE 2 – 0.235mm
PE 2.5 – 0.260mm
PE 3 – 0.285mm
PE 3.5 – 0.310mm
PE 4 – 0.330mm
PE 5 – 0.370mm
From what I've read pe 0.6 = 6lb line, Pe 1=10lb, pe2=20lb, pe3=30lb roughly. Looks fairly straight foward comparing line diameter braid v mono.

thanks nhill, seems as though it isn't linear. Anyone know what PE 0.4 is?

Pe 0.4 should be 4lb going by what I've read.

My understanding is that it is a multiple of 10. Eg. PE0.6 = 6lb, PE2 = 20lb, PE5 = 50lb, etc.
Not sure how correct this is though.

It sorta does with power pro etc. but some of the 8 carriers are getting 14lb breaking strain in PE 0.6

Ha...There goes that theory then!!
Geez, what's next? It won't be long before we'll be spooling up 1000 size reels with a km of line, ready to chase marlin up north!

hate to burst your bubble guys, but there is a big problem with PE ratings,
even the Japanese manufactures of it cant agree with one another, go check out some of their websites and you will see that even the same manufacturer has got different diameters for their own different brands.
its a very weird subject and good luck getting to the bottom of it as the bloody pe thing keeps changing
