Tips on making sinkers from mould

Post by aussie_fisho » Sun Aug 24, 2014 8:36 pm

It's been a while since I have made my own sinkers, and I decided I'll make a few more for snapper season. All I can say is I have lost my touch, I couldn't make one full sinker out of the hour and a half trying. I tried the mould heated and cool, and still none of the sinkers come out right. Any advice on what I could do to better my results.

Mold hot, lead hot, even pour. Not sure why they would not turn out.

Probably need more heat in both lead and the mould.

I have done a timber mould, it worked quite well, my 5 ounce mould turned into a 20ounce slowly which was perfect, so I ended up with different sizes. Can you remember what would you used?

you may have other metals than just pure lead therefore you need more heat bigger blow torch and try not to let it cool off brick surrounds i would be careful with battery lead full of sulphur wouldn't want to breathe the fumes

Does the lead melt in under the heat you are using I use a stainless pot on a normal camp stove, I find the trick is preheating the mould. If after you have poured the lead the sinker is only half formed the mould is not hot enough. I put them on the second burner on the camp stove if you are struggle pour the lead in each half leave for a couple of minutes the try again they should be heated through.

I think thats the problem, will have to get some clean and pure lead and see how it goes.
Also i heat the moulds to the point that there nearly to hot for me to un clamp with the gloves.

Thanks for advice guys, cheers aussie.
