Ridiculous price of fish hooks

Post by Bartnmax » Fri Jun 20, 2014 10:55 pm

Dropped into the local Big Crappy Franchise tonight for the first time in ages.
Wanted to buy myself a new Hawaiian sling.
Wandered around the isles & was amazed to see a pack of 30 size 6/0 Owner circle hooks priced at $51.
Yeah I know owners are great hooks but still;
Half a bloody hundred dollars for a packet of hooks?
That's just absolutely ridiculous in the extreme.

By the way, let's talk again about why people shop on line hey?

No bloody wonder.
Wankers.
Definitely wont be buying my tackle there ever again.

Bill.

And they don't really do anything a packet of gamakatsu or mustad hooks won't do for 1/4 the price.

I picked up a pack of http://www.specialtyfishing.com.au/prod ... rcle-hook/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; in 6/0 on the surf W/E from Cam

so far they have not been used however I did do a bit of a bend test ( a lot of cheaper hooks are quite brittle and snap )
so with some pliers and quite a bit of force I did straghten one out , it didn't snap so I'm fairly sure they will do the job quite well

they are worth a look and a dam side cheaper than any of the big names

I've been using mustad hooks for about 25 years now (although I haven't bought any new hooks in over 15 years ), I've never had a problem with one, great hooks imo.

After being very impressed with them years ago (mustad hooks), when I was a more full on fisho, I bought a 'heap' of them in bulk over 20 years ago in all different sizes ( a few thousand hooks all up, in all different sizes and styles ), I still have a lot left new and unused in their clear hard cases , still like brand new and sharp as the day they were made. I'm still using the supply I bought years ago, although I'm down to the last few cases now.

I'm not sure if mustad make them as good a quality these days as they did 20 years ago ?, as I haven't bought any in years.
Although nothing made these days seems to lasts long anymore. Companies have learner these days that making stuff that last forever means less sales over time, and no sales at all in the end ( if it is built to last forever ).

Cheers , Rick.

It's a tough one for sure. Some stuff seems ridiculously priced - especially for consumable items. I go through jigheads at a huge rate. In the end I bought a hook file/sharpener to get a little more life out of them. Always looking for the best bang for buck and quite often that means buying O/S online.

I don't mind spending money on my hobby but there is a limit. Some lures are now at $30 for one.... a big hit to lose to a snag or fish :/

Gamakatsu are only marginally cheaper at around $35 for a 25 pack. Try the shogun hooks

As ducky said shogun are great for the price only $20 for 100. They aren't as sharp as owners or gamas but I used to use them bait fishing for snapper and never had an issue. For species with tougher mouths I'll use something slightly lighter gauge and sharper like a gama.

Yeah those prices are absolutely over the top. This is exactly why so many people buy via ebay, etc.
Then we'll no doubt hear retailers complaining about their loss of sales.

Yeah I usually also use Gamas but also use & like Owners. I agree you get what you pay for so I don't use el-cheapo hooks or line, but again 1/2 A HUNDRED BUCKS FOR A PACKET OF HOOKS IS B _ _ _S _ _ T.
