Rod or reel?

Post by April Fool » Fri Oct 19, 2018 9:51 pm

Hi all
I am bored sh!tless tonight! A question...what do people consider to be the most important aspect of a combo...the rod or reel? Should they be matched quality (price) wise? Or can you skimp on the rod and get an expensive reel and expect to do just as well...or vice versa? Of course line and terminal tackle is important but meh...we all know that!
cheers

I always prefer quality reel over rod

Except for stellas. They are only for wankers

But seriously, reel over rod.

I'd have to disagree with you Kimtown. As long as the reel is "okay" and by this i mean a decent drag and a few ball bearings it's only for collecting line really. The rod is what you cast with, feel bites with and fight the fish with. This is only my opinion though for lure fishing because it sucks trying to cast lures and feel bites with shitty rods.

Cheers, Anth

You can't be a wanker without a rod!

l am not sure which is best as my pb bream was caught on a $36 reel with $13 mono line and a rod which l got from a magazine subscription.
Although in the past l would always look at the reel first until l brought a Shimano Bream raider rod which feels fantastic, still yet to catch anything decent on it so l don't know what difference a better quality rod would make.
A mate recently caught a 40cm Bream on a Shimano Starlo Classix light spin using a Sienna 1000fd and 4lb Berkley flurocarbon and that setup handled the fish really well(rod and reel would be 10 years old)
l will be interested to see what other people think.

I like the fries and drinks in a combo.

Light-med gear the rod matters most. When it comes to things like deep dropping, game fishing, GT popping and other high strain, high stress fishing the reel is as if not more important than the rod
