Get a multi piece and if you're going 3 piece you might as well go 4 piece...so much more compact. I got a cheap Savage gear spin rod 4 piece the action is pretty good!

I have been looking for some time for a budget travel rod and ordered a catchmax 4 piece spinning rod for about 40 bucks havnt tested it yet as it wont arrive for another few weeks but looks good, i would attach a link to it on ebay but am not tech minded so not sure how to, seems they specialise in budget fly rods but have a few multi piece aswell as telescopic spinning rods in there lineup, also kastking do from what i gather from reviews a super telescopic rod called the kastking ranger, ill post my opinion of the maxcatch rod when i get it, there is not much decent readiley available travel rods for sale in australia as far as i can gather compared to the states and uk.

I have never been a big fan of telescopic rods.
Like many have already mentioned I would also go for a multi piece as well.

Worst case scenario. Get the generation black ones from.daiwa..
They don't come with a headcase though.
But that's easily sorted at the bunnings plumbing section

Thanks everyone for there input.

I sent broomstick a PM as the rods he had for sale looked to be perfect for me, if I don't hear from him I will pick up a multi piece rod tonight.

I have 4 telescopic rods on the boat now. The first was a blue jarvis walker that I paid $25 for. You can buy it in K mart and some servos. The reel is crap but the rod is stiff enough and has brought up 45 cm partial gummies and high 40cm flatheads. But I am keeping it working with WD40 and its still motoring on. I like the rod now as it is also stiff enough with enough feel for squid jigs. Although it is cheap, I like it because the butt is long enough to sit in the rod holder on the boat without the reel touching the fiberglass and it is virtually indestructible so far.

I also have a silstar 6 feet telescopic. Really nice and flexible. Have caught a bunch of flatheads with that one on a lure and some salmon. In fact, this rod caught me my first fish (a salmon) on a boat in PPB. This one runs about $69. This one is graphite and will break when overloaded.

Shimano also has a cheap telescopic rod for $25. I think its eclipse. Cant remember the name, but the butt is too short for flush rod holders on the boat. I bought it because at that time I could not find a telescopic rod that was stiff enough that had enough feel. It is my least favourite telescopic rod as I found that it does not have enough feel and the short butt also makes it harder to cast far.

The final rod is about $50? Bought it at the boat show. It is eurocork brand called telescopic 6 feet. Turned out to be a really nice rod. Long butt, and fast and enough stiffness to give sufficient feel. All my telescopics are about 6 feet or so and mainly used on the boat and occasionally, I throw the silstar or the jarvis walker in the bag to go fishing on land when I am travelling.
