Spooling my overhead.

Post by Gummysmasher » Tue Feb 06, 2018 6:30 pm

Hey guys, have recently brought a penn rival overhead for fishing for gummys, firstly what are your thoughts. I have some 50lb braid in the tackle box and want to spool it with it, but will it be enough. I'm fishing westernport. I know how big gummys can get and there massive runs so will I need to put some backing line on it then braid ? Cheers.

What size reel did you buy?
Around at 20 or 30

Could do half spool of 15kg backing and then rest braid.
Should get over 100 mt of braid and then should be plenty amd benefit of having 15kg backing can catch many good size fish on that.

Max depth of westenport is around 30 mt and its highly doutful a gummy will pull 70 extra mt of 5kg drag.

Got more chance of a ray pulling more line and just siting there not moving.

50lb braid is more than ample.
We use 25-30lb mono for all our gummy and snapper fishing, (and all the associated bycatch), and never really have a problem with that.
