I have never used the thing either and no idea what it was for. I want to play with it now. Like the line clip, pommy carp fishos use it for measuring but apart from that no real reason.

99% sure it's a hangover from old reels when the drags wernt as good and you had to wind backwards instead...you'll find that a lot of reels dont have them anymore (I presume some reels still have them because people may think something is cheap about their new purchase if its missing)

Yep, they're largely irrelevant these days, plus they're just an extra spot for salt-water to get inside the reel.

I removed it from my Sienna 2500 and plugged the hole with some epoxy putty,

When I’ve been fishing heavy drags on lightish rods. Eg 3kg drag on a 2-5kg rod (yes, no bull) I’ve found it handy whenever I’ve wound a lure to the tip of my rod. Flick the anti reverse and back the lure off the tip. It’s safer than grabbing a hand full of leader and pulling it off.
