Damn expensive reel. :-) Too flashy still?

Fish don't care what we paid for. :-))

For what it's worth, I appreciate Rb's posts...right or wrong, they create more robust discussions and stop the whole forum from being a circle-jerk.
Also appreciate inputs from the hardcore fisherman that know what they are talking about through experience...what I've learnt from all the guys on Fishing Vic has really taken my fishing to a new level.
Probably wont be getting a high end reel at this stage as from what you are all saying it would be like driving a Ferrari through the city when they are designed to work best on a racetrack.

scott__henning wrote:Stella's are purely a "get one if you can afford it" sort of gear for most types of fishing.

However if you want to chase marlin/big tuna/GT's/big kingfish then you really want the expensive gear that you know for sure can handle hours and hours at 20kg of drag without crumbling to dust.

The cheaper reels will do it for a bit, but eventually they will fail and that might result in loosing the fish of a lifetime, which would be a real pain.

Saying that, I've got a saltiga dogfight (for Marlin) as I've spoken to multiple charter operators in Exmouth who consider them far superior to the Stella.

Yeah, but they only had large ones in stock....felt like I was looking at jewellery at Tiffany's (I was surprised he didn't make me wear white gloves) Have to say, it felt pretty good...it felt 'precise' if you know what I mean. There wasn't a huge difference between the Stella and my Saragosa, but I guess you'd notice the difference under load. Might reconsider a purchase if I ever step up and start chasing marlin or humpbacks (but I'd probably stick with the overheads to be honest). If money wasn't an option, of course I'd have a couple...I think everyone would

Thats the plan matt, own one one day, but when you can afford the purchase.
Do yourself a favour though, go in and salivate over playing with a dogfight !!! I rate them also over a stella.
But, don't think the flatty's in port phillip bay would notice any difference LOL
Well, as my boat is still being "re made" I'm left doing maintenance on my reels, I'm servicing a 57 year old penn senator, that still goes, loves fighting tuna and kingies and has pulled in its fair share of marlin over the years, but don't tell anybody I bought it for 39.99 in the 70's and you can get a second hand one now for $100 and modify it for $200 and it still does what most modern technology reels do !
But that's another Debate ! LOL
Oh, and good on ya RB, Say it as it is mate !
its unfortunate that opinions are like arseholes, everyone has one ! but some don't have the ability to exep't that fact !
Matt, go play with that dogfight, you'll be impressed

"Saying it how it is" relies on scientific evidence or indisputable facts. Not ones matter of opinion.
 observation don't count? So your disputing that a reel such as a Stella is unnecessary for most applications in Victoria.
Not when your observations come from your own (somewhat skewed) personal opinion.

I'm not disputing anything. Whether or not the reel is unnecessary is a matter of circumstance and personal enjoyment specific to the individual.

To think that you are that enlightened to be able to call someone a fool because of how they choose to spend and enjoy their money sounds like a fools way of thinking to me.
Funny that but many fisherman share my view on people purchasing Stellas or other high end tackle when more budget friendly alternatives would be suitable. Don't know what draws you to the conclusion my view is skewed.

Circumstance and personal enjoyment have absolutely nothing to do with whether a reel is going to be used to suit it's potential or a cheaper alternative will be sufficient.

If Matt Black said he wanted a spin reel to cast lures at surface feeding pelagics for example Barrel Bluefin Tuna then a Stella would be a good recommendation. Never did I suggest I was enlightened I posted my honest opinion pure and simple after Cador asked me a question following from my sledgehammer inch nail remark. Seems that a few people didn't like the answer big deal it's not the first time doubt it will be the last.

FYI I own a range of reels and rods some cheaper others more expensive and all from various manufacturers I'm not brand loyal cost, application and the amount of use it will get are all taken into account before I buy.
