I have a 2-4kg shimano I fish series 6,6 rod with a sienna reel.

Do you think that would be okay to use?
You will catch squid on that without a worry. If you are just starting out then have a crack first and see if you like it.

Squid can be caught on just about anything.... a purpose built squid rod is really only needed if you are serious about squidding and wan't to get the most out of your gear.

If it was me I would get out there and have a try first, learn the technique, how to setup your gear, purchase a few jigs and see what you think. If you are doing a bit of it then look at upgrading.

On another note, silstar have a rod for about $100 bucks "Silstar Egiist" which get's a good write up.

Cheers mate I will just give that a shot.

With the rod that I spoke about would that be ideal for whiting aswell?
It will catch squid no worries only pitfall is you will lose jigs easier the other thing to be aware of is the action of the rod.
