Best all rounder rod and reel?

Fairly new to all this fishing business.

Wanting some knowledge on what people think is best to use for a bit of everything...

A bait rod for small whiting to pinkies even to mulloway from a land based position..

Would you use the same rod for lure ( hard bodies and sp) fishing or would you have a different set up, if so what?

I often fish land-based for the species you mention (yet to bag a Jewie though!).

I use a light 12ft surf rod (Rovex Airsurf Prime) and a 6000-sized reel, with 15lb braid.
This has handled plenty of pinkies, whiting, trevally, flatties and salmon and has also
had to cope with the usual 'bycatch' like banjos, eagle rays and draughtboard sharks,
while bait-fishing.

The extra casting distance lets you cover a lot more ground than you can with a
shorter rod.

I use the same rod from the surf and rocks, and it has handled some big salmon, couta
and pike.

I also have a 8ft light spinning rod and 4000-sized reel for when I don't need the casting distance.

Mate it all depends on exactly where you plan on fishing. Off a beach you'd get away with mingles setup, off a pier a 12' might be unnecessary.

Just get your self something in the 9' range, with a 4500 reel, maybe one of those light graphite combo's & some good terminal tackle.. You should be alright to give most things a go & once you figure out what you enjoy/need you begin to add..

i would suggest a 7 foot, 3-7kg rod and a 2500/3000 sized reel if you want something that can do it all.
you can bait fish with this, as well as use lures to a certain extent, spin for salmon, catch pinkies and even small mulloway.
using this on a surf beachs however is not going to work very well.

ideally a bait outfit and a lure outfit would be two different setups without any doubt.

If I could only have one rod and reel if would be a 5kg 7-7.5ft spin stick with a shimano ci4 4000.

Which happens to be the biggest joke going.

Something mid weight with a stout butt to withstand a big fish but soft tip so you can still catch small stuff. Something like a 7-8 foot ugly stick. You will loose sensitivity for soft plastics and small lures. But then you are talking compromise. The SP style rods are likely to snap when you start flinging big leads and hauling in big fish, you need something forgiving. A 4500 reel will allow a good amount of line for modest beach casting,and upping the drag for gummies etc yet not overly heavy. 15lb braid mainline with leader line to suit usage of the day

For mainly lure and soft plastics any of the 2-4kg 7 foot SP rods trion/catana/etc with 2500 reel, are more sensitive and easier to repeatedly cast, as you aren't targeting gummies with them. As a newbie with a one comprise set up odds of catching a big mullaway are so negligiable as to not even be worth adding to the equation. Surprisingly you dont need a huge set up for big snapper.

For any real surf fishing you need a big strong rod to keep line above water and cope with drag of accumulated weed. Also as you wade in cast as far as you can then often walk a fair way back up the beach to plant the rod you have a lot of line out before a fish or the tide even takes it. Typically also use heavier line, all meaning bigger reels in the region of 8000 upwards.
