Soft plastics/lightweight rod recommendations

Post by bigdan91 » Mon Sep 26, 2016 7:45 pm

Looking for something lightweight to target flatties, whiting, bream, trout etc with soft plastics and lures
Getting an inflatable boat soon so will be using out of that as well as wading shallows etc

Currently I have
10-12ft surf rods
9 ft surf spin rod
7 ft squid rod with 20lb braid

What are some good budget options and what size braid and leader should I look at

I'm thinking around the 6-7 ft with 6-10lb line

Don't want to spend more than $100-150 for the whole setup

Cheers!

I run 4lb trilene ,with 10pound leader on a 1000 Sienna on a shimano Sahara, n wilsion blue steel.
Lighter the line the heavy the plastic feels n cast further...
I also have t-curve that I have not used....brand new ...might sell since I have 5plastic rods in 7ft range ...109$think I paid

Yeah I'll do a bit more research and might take you up on it.

Unfortunately doesn't leave much in the budget for a reel and line though

Spend more and get a drunk monkey and a 1000 stradic! That's my light rod for plastic n hard bodies for trout n reddies n it's absolutely banger! That being said the Abu Garcia veritas rod 1-3kg is also a very good choice!
If I'm not fishing, I'd rather be fishing!

Decent rod, I'm looking at this too. Well actually the 2 piece version.
Wondering what you think of it vs the 7ft? I gotta put in some decent SP time this summer for flathead & bream and can't decide between the 2 sizes.
cheers

personally i'd lean more towards a 6'6" as it's more manageable in tight quarters and you don't really lose that much distance over a 7'. The line you run will have a bigger effect i reckon. Also the 2500 is probably more versatile than a 1000.

i hear good things about the pflueger trion and shakespere slingshot rods though i don't know if they fall within your budget. Abu veritas are very good also. atm i think there is a shimano catana/sienna combo deal from one of the tackle chains that's around the $100 mark.

Yo bigdan91, i recently purchased a shimano nexave 6 foot something for $69 bux down from $120, and paired it with shimano sienna 2500 thats on a super hot deal for just $30 bux. Shazam just under $100 rod and reel, ive been flicking plastic and it feels fantastic. I spooled it with 4 lb braid, with 8lb mono trace. All up 120 bux, you beauty!! Oh both rod and reel is on special atm at trellys tackle world. Im getting another one as soon as i get paid :)
