I'm wondering how many folks collect vintage fishing gear. I'm not a collector as such but I do like to use the old stuff now and again.

I acquired a lovely old English centrepin reel over the weekend, a J.W.Young Rapidex, 4 1/2" drum. Very much a collectors piece these days although I've bought it to use, not sit in a cupboard. It'll be a perfect reel for trotting a float down the rivers and also for margin fishing in still water.

It was pretty gummed up but I've stripped and cleaned all the internals this morning and it's in great working condition now. Sometime down the track I'll restore the paintwork.
:)

I also don't collect vintage reels as a rule but I do have a very nice Cussons Estuary fly reel ( 3 3/8 dia and 9/16 wide ) used but in box , I believe these date from before the mid sixties
I also have quite a few Penn OHs that date back a bit but most are still used my 140 penn squidders go on my surf gear and 501 and 500 jigmasters are on my gummy gear - as a kayak reel it's hard to beat these old school penns - no bearings to go south every time they get a bit wet

and my old big gun is a 12/0 senator
My kayak PBs
Gummy shark 128 Cm - Elephant fish 85 Cm - Snapper 91 Cm - KG Whiting 49 Cm - Flathead 55 Cm - Garfish 47 Cm - Silver Trevally 40 Cm - Long Tail Tuna 86 Cm - snook 64 Cm - Couta 71 Cm - Sth Calamari 44 Cm hood - Cobia 117 cm

Watch out you may get hooked on collecting! I bought a couple a few years back & now have a selected collection, usually pick them up at bush markets & carboot sales. Some great gear & some that needs tlc like yours. You'll enjoy the first fish caught on that one

Sad to say I do have more than my fair share of collecting genes. Over the years I've collected all kinds of crap!

I almost only use old gear now, crouch and mitchell reels, split cane rods, etc. The one exception is my graphite flyrod. Apart from that, nothing younger than early 1960s.

You can pick up some bargains by going through rural second hand stores.

Best Wishes
