Light rod 8'-10' for freshwater - any thoughts?
G'day folks!
Does anyone have any advice please for an 8-10ft rod to use for fishing with floats, and the occasional lure? A light action is required as this would be for freshwater lake use, predominately chasing trout. Have got a couple of 14 footers, but they feel like surf rods to me. There doesn't seem to be much on the market (that I've seen anyway) and I'm not too keen on paying mega bucks for custom made rods at this stage. Any thoughts please?
Cheers,
Redhunter

Maybe not the perfect solution for you but I often use my egi (specialist squid jig) rod for this purpose. Mine is only an 8' because I fish for squid from a boat but many people buy the longer varieties. They generally have a slow even action and work well with floats in lakes. I imagine it would be good for garfish from piers too. And you have an egi rod for squid! I think I paid about $90 for my silstar but all the big brands make egi rods now. All the best.

Daiwa produce longer versions of their Procaster rods - I have seen them used though they might not be available in oz.
One option which might be the easiest is buy a fly rod and change the grip and reel seat. You could check out a lot of rods till you find one with exactly the weight and action you want. Then change the reel seat if you wish - I probably wouldn't though as holding the rod in front of the reel would probably be more comfortable. When I googled Procaster I accidentally located a rod that might meet your needs though I personally don't know anything about it:

A good 9ft rod is the Daiwa Lancer, comes in 1-3kg and is quite good

Re: Light rod 8'-10' for freshwater - any thoughts?
Thanks very much for the feedback!
I probably should have mentioned that something in the 3-5 or 3-6kg line class is probably what I'm looking for, along with something with a decent butt on it for leverage when needing to cast distance. Weight is also a factor, especially if lure casting.
Skonkman - S/P and squid type rods have actually crossed my mind bud. Along with luderick/blackfish rods, however usually they tend to be designed with a short butt end to accomodate side cast reels.
Tackleberry - Snyder glass rods are very nice indeed mate. Have used them before for jews and admittedly I was quite impressed with how good they felt, especially when loaded up. You may be onto something there mate.
Truedogz - the procaster rods only come in 7ft here, but you're right they are available in longer lengths from o/s. I work in the freight game though, and wouldn't put alot of faith in rods arriving in good nic if being sent internationally. Worst case though, customizing a couple of fly rods may be an alternative, but a bit of work would be required to replace guides and extend the butt section (possibly by moving the reel seat fwd).
Boony - the black queen is cheap, and durable, but is a bit on the weighty side I reckon. Although I said 8-10ft, I'd probably prefer something a bit closer to the 9-10ft range.
Again, many thanks for the feedback so far folks, it's appreciated. There's a few options there for me to investigate a little further. Cheers.
