Recommend a rod/reel for land/pier based?

Post by LightninLopez » Tue Apr 19, 2016 9:02 am

G'day guys, I've decided to buy another rod for land/pier based fishing. At the moment I only have light rigs, so I'm looking to get something on the upper end of medium. Nothing too crazy - not about to start trying my hand at surf fishing. You get the idea. Ideally something that can handle a paternoster rig and give me a shot at landing a decent sized pinky,

Any recommendations or tips on what to look out for?

200 for the combo? Might go over if there's a compelling argument. Doesn't include line, tackle, etc.

Something cheap but with enough power to stop most fish you'll find on piers/estuaries you could pick up a shimano Catana 6-8kg from $60-$80 and pair it with a Daiwa exceler which are on special for $120 atm on dinga..

I have a few catanas and absolutely love those things. Great rods for the price you pay :)

That's what most guys will recommend. Catana/sienna 4k combo. Will serve you well and I think sometimes a 12ft rod is overkill on piers. Can be too long to manoeuvre. Bonus is that you can use it to spin beaches of you get into that in the future

get the 10 foot and 3000 sized reel, will be plenty for pinkies and banjoes etc etc. and can still use in to spin beaches
