BOOM goes the rod
I have a love hate affair with this rod the shimano Sephia Au. It is the only rod I have managed to break twice. First time was the tip of the blank when casting a squid jig during the warranty period of the rod and a second time the other day while casting a 1 oz. This time was the bottom of the blank shattered. Oh well this rod goes into retirement now.

Re: BOOM goes the rod
2nd time? I think it's trying to tell you something!
Carbon rods (I'm assuming it is, from the pics) are so fragile...
All it takes is an unnoticed chip or ding in the surface of the wrap, then once it's loaded up it'll pop.
Decent tubular glass is the way to go.
I wonder what the broken-rod ratio is for glass vs carbon?
Mike.

Re: BOOM goes the rod
Glass don't cast very far though. I've broken 4 glass rods, but 3 of them were Kmart ones so I'm not sure if it's fair to add them to the glass rod tally. Stingrays were the main offender.

but in all honesty. what the hell were you looking to catch that needed a 1oz weight to be casted.

Re: BOOM goes the rod
If it's the rod I'm thinking of (pretty sure it is) I know people who use it to cast up to 2oz chasing whiting, pinkies and salmon. Never used it personally but heard it's not the greatest egi rod but a great all rounder.

That's not a great outcome I had a Shimano Sonic Pro V2 let go when a had a decent sized redfin near the boat as soon as it changed direction and dived under the boat boom the rod exploded 5inches from the tip still caught the reddie though.

Seriously though I think for casting long distances glass rods are fine, unless you're into tournament-casting and want to spend many $100s on a custom carbon blank. I know a few old blokes who can cast almost twice as far as me using old 14ft glass rods, but I guess that must be down to my technique!
Cheers,
Mike.
