Extra Heavy Casting / Surf Rod

Post by DougieK » Wed Mar 09, 2016 10:01 am

What are some options other than this?
http://daiwafishing.com.au/products/saltiga-surf-2/

or this

http://www.bustedfishing.com/#!/Anyfish ... ry=9764191

Chasing a rod casting 8oz plus, line 40lbish, for long casting rock ledges and ocean beaches.

Currently using a Nitro Surf Messiah, stunning rod but the 4oz cast weight is limiting my ability to stick heavy sinkers on non reefy bottom.

I'm leaning towards the Saltiga because it lets me use either a threadline or an overhead.

Will be matched with a Lethal 100 for the time being, which I have both a 15kg spool of mono and planning on spooling the other with a kilometre of 30lb Tasline elite braid.

Do shimano make a comparable product?

^ actually I have. Bottom line is i'm pretty sure I can get a brand new Saltiga for about 400-450, going to be way way way better than trying to import something.

The South Africans make some wicked rods as well. I'm just looking for options, and if I want to cast 8oz a long way this seems like the best one atm, but i'm sure there's dozens of products i've never even heard of and wouldn't know where to start looking.

Jump on the surfcasting forum and see what they recommend. You might find someone will sell you a combo second hand too, a couple of weeks ago a bloke was flogging a Neil Mackallow PPT sidewinder 13'6 4-7oz but I think it is gone now.

This is just speculation but based on the Pe 1.5-3 rating of the daiwa it may not have as much guts as other rods they make with the same cast rating (typically PE6-8 rods) this is purely speculation but something that may be worth looking into.

From what I've found the the market is quite thin when it comes to heavy surf rods in japan, there is a fair few shorejigging rods on the market but the max cast weight is about 5oz, usually less, and the rods are a bit shorter than you are looking at. That isn't to say that a large market doesn't exist but I am yet to find it if it does.

Have a look at the Daiwa Sensor Surf Izm series SS 153XXS, 15 ft rated to 24kg chucking lures up to 300g.
If you want to have a cast of the Saltiga surf let me know as I'm in Franga Sth.

What kind of length you chasing mate? On the expensive side you have the century slingshots which no doubt will be out of budget

but I'd be looking at a custom build based off a decent blank.

Dougie, Suggest that you meet up with me and have a play with a few rods that can actually cast those weights a LONG way when you have the right technique. The Daiwa is one that I would not be recommending if you are going to be using the larger sinkers and a decent sized bait as well . Best value for money blank that I have see was the original Kilwell Pendulum 1 for both its capability as well as price. sadly they are no longer made. The SA blanks and rod are good value but generally built up for reels at the bottom of the blank. I have a Purglass 400/6 that is also capable of what you are asking .

Rod preference is so personal and down to your casting style as to what will suit. My comment is about the new high carbon blanks. I dont think they make great rock fishing rods, they are too fragile. I would personally look for an older model with a lower carbon content and therefore something 13ft or less. I got a Greys T140 for christmas and its not going near anywhere near a rock ledge would be like taking an Aston Martin offroading.

I wouldn't say that I have a number of Century's in my collection and they are full carbon designed for what the UK anglers call rough ground which is basically rock fishing but where distance isn't the main objective but power to drag fish through heavy weed and snags and not allow the fish to pull the rod down and give them an opportunity to get snagged up.
those same rods though have the ability to put large weights out a long way.
