Have 5 Shimano Spin reels - Every one is Excellent - 2 are Aero Stradic 1000 - Made in 1994 - Still working perfectly. If not sure of what you are getting, Google "Shimano Symetre FL 4000 Diagram" and have a look at construction.

Re: Any love for the Shimano Symetre FL
I have 2, paired with 7'3 Shimano Sonic Pro V2, spooled with 20lb Kato Mono. Picked em up on some sort of Combo Special a while back. Absolutely love them, great on the bread and butter species.. Smooth Drag, really nice line lay, helps when casting too. Thumbs up from me.. I fish locally quite often, more then welcome to give them a try if you like..
Having said that, on my 9' i went with the new Sedona 5000, I have multiple uses for the rod, ranging from lures, to whiting off the surf when i need distance and fishing of rocks when a surf rod isn't required so the 5000 spool have me some flexibility and made me feel better, even though there probably isn't much noticeable difference..

Re: Any love for the Shimano Symetre FL
Have an FJ model (4000); feels tougher than FL. FL seems flimsier / has more plasticky bits, puts me right off. Pinion shaft is also thinner in the FL; definitely streamlined to meet some cost cutting targets. If you can find an FJ though, get it.

I own both and agree that the Fj feels tougher, though I have put the FL through a fair bit of abuse and it hasn't failed me yet.
Nice reel for the price in my opinion.
4000 fj I use for piff'n slugs at salmon

Re: Any love for the Shimano Symetre FL
thanks for the reply's so far the reason i ask about the reel is i bought a
3000 fj years ago and it always felt like you were draging a lot of weed
it just felt a lot harder to wind than any reel i have owned .

Can't say I've had that problem with mine and Catana Nano XG
