Re: Overhead reel for surf fishing recommendations
If you want a hand to learn how to use that outfit give me a yell and we can organise a session down at the beach or better on the field and then down at the beach. We just had a comp up at Lancefield which would have been an ideal opportunity to learn how to use the gear best.
A few suggestions if you do get out and try the outfit are as follow.
1. Run a shock leader with a breaking strain of approximately 50 pound.
2. Set the reels mag setting to 10 on the Squall 12.
3. Take things easy and try for good technique before trying for distance.
Relaxe and have fun.
One you get it right it's a blast.

Re: Overhead reel for surf fishing recommendations
Thanks for that Jeremy, unfortunately I had some uni commitments this weekend otherwise I'd have come down to the comp.
When the rods arrive I'd love to meet up with a few of the surfcasters sometime. I'm still waiting for the Saffers to get back to me about the cost of posting two rods so it might be a while. Not that I'll be doing much fishing until my exams are over...
In that video, are you looking for a change in the way the line is peeling off to work out when to stop the reel?

Re: Overhead reel for surf fishing recommendations
No not really , most of the time when I have a bait on I don't need to and generally stop the spool just before the bait and sinker touch down. Note though that I don't go near the spool while it is going out as the mag system does all the control.

Re: Overhead reel for surf fishing recommendations
Does that cause problems with fishing at night when you can't see the sinker hit the water?

Just shine your headlight onto the reel. When you see the reel slowing down keep your thumb close to the spool and press it. This will help prevent a major birds nest
To fish or not to fish...NOT TO FISH ??Yea...like that's even an option !

Re: Overhead reel for surf fishing recommendations
Went for a cast with the new rod and reel last night, it went pretty well. I think doing a lot of reading about technique beforehand made a big difference. I did a few short casts without any issue and felt confident enough to let a few rip, ended up getting to 100m which I think was a decent effort given the lead was too light to load up the rod properly. Got a few minor birds nests, but nothing that couldn't be fixed by peeling a meter of line off the spool. I did get a bad birds nest that ended the session though, it snagged the line somehow and the sinker flew off never to be seen again.
Something I noticed that may be a problem, there was a bit of grease leaking from between the reel 'body' and the spool. No idea if that is normal, if I was doing something wrong or if it is a fault with the reel.
(Arrows indicate where the grease is)

Re: Overhead reel for surf fishing recommendations
I have no idea about the grease, but 100m is a fair cast mate, well done.

Re: Overhead reel for surf fishing recommendations
Its certainly the furthest I've ever cast before, although once baits and other tackle are added in it might only be 80m or so.
