Ended up getting one of the Slammers better than it was out of the box (they don't use enough lube imo), now it's nice and smooth and there wasn't any issue with the bearings that I could see. The other one had some sand between the anti-reverse bearing that sits on the pinion and the casing which had got into one of the bearings. I couldn't get the pinion out without a lot of violence and when I put the whole thing back together the reel was clunky as ****, I'll have to take that one into the shop I think. I like the Slammers though, very easy to take apart and put back together.

After yesterdays accident I've found a couple of the sealed bearings in the reels have got sand in them and while they are passable for the time being I doubt they'll be with us for much longer.

My question is whether I have to replace them with bearings ordered from someone specifically selling Penn parts ($13 each plus postage) or can I get some that are the same dimensions?

Go to a reputable bearing/power transmission place & they should be able give you a quote.Just take the bearing's in with you if you can't find the numbers on them or measure them accurately yourself.Even anti reverse bearing's are commonly available.

Why not just pop the seal and run them open after a clean? The actual bearing is probably fine internally

I didn't know this was possible. I might give it a go.

Finally got them done, only the Slammers had issues with the bearings and after a clean out they were running smooth enough. Glad I know how to do this myself or I'd have been out of pocket for a decent amount. Thanks for the help as always!
