Baitcasters vs egg beater reels
While I am looking at a couple of new rods and reels - I am seeing more and more bait caster reels in combos.
My last experience with them was many, many years ago.....end result is there is one somewhere on the bottom of the Plenty River Bangg birds nest and tangles all it seemed to be good for.
However I guess technology has progressed and maybe they are better now than they were back then.
So for the average fisherperson, mainly bait fishing landbased, and casting the occasional lure - which is better - a baitcaster reel or the good old egg beater reel?

Re: Baitcasters vs egg beater reels
I have one that I don't use. IMO no amount of technology can replace practice in good conditions. Take it into the back yard, put a weight on the line similar to the weight of lure you're going to use, place a teatowel on the ground and practice casting it until it becomes second nature.
It will make hanging off the side of a bank casting around one snag but under the overhanging trees to get that sneaky trout infinitely easier.

They haven't improved all that much perhaps you would be better to stick with an egg better.

Re: Baitcasters vs egg beater reels
I would not use a baitcaster for trout size lures, I use then for bigger things like spinnerbaits and smaller outfit for yellow belly lures.
You need a bit of heft in the lure to make these things work, I find them easier to use all day because of the
smaller outfit weight.....IMHO!!
They take some mastering but "horses for courses" as they say!
Cheers

Re: Baitcasters vs egg beater reels
I would stick with the eggbeater...with practice the baitcaster can be good, especially if you have a good one as I believe the line peels off the reel easier so you can get better casting distance but for me personally I would go with something you have total confidence in. Just imagine if you see a fish and you fk up the cast and it swims away.

Re: Baitcasters vs egg beater reels
As said previously it depends on practice I have an ABU 1500 with no level wind on it matched to a 6ft 1-3kg blank and have no problems down to about a 3 gram lure or soft plastic, if you want to get below 3 grams would recommend an egg beater. I do like the ABU as I find it easy to brake with my thumb if i want the lure/bait to drop just on or under the tree line that I am casting at: line wise I am using 6lb Fins Braid

Baitcasters are magnificent when you get use to them imo
I use both still ...depends on what im fishing for.
I also use baitcasters for trolling for trout now...easy to use with down riggers ect

Re: Baitcasters vs egg beater reels
Id say spinner. Besides ease of use. Theres alot more options available for spinners in comparison to baitcasters.
But personally i like baitcasters but like the others have said. It requires some practice
