Hi guy's, I'm looking into buying a soft plastics rod preferred length of 7 feet, I figure I can control the fish better if they head for pylon's or structure.

I have no idea on the rod line rating or the action soft or fast tapers ? also is a 1000 or 2500 size reel better ?

At this stage I'm looking at 7 foot rods unless I'm recommended another length ?

I will use braid 8 to 10 LB or is this too heavy or to light ?

I may take up brother sloths offer and buy the 1000 size reel he has up for sale depending on the advise I get here, THX guys.

I'm going in small $ to see if this style is for me or not so at the moment about $60 for the rod and $60 for the reel, the braid I have in various sizes so don't need line.. thx.

Fast taper is much better for plastics, reel and line depends on the rating of the rod. For example a 1-3kg rod is usually best suited to a 1000-2000 sized reel and a 2-4kg rod with a 2000-2500 but it also depends on how it balances etc.

Hi nude up, 1 to 3 kilo string seems to me to be under powered ? I feel more comfortable with 8 to 10 LB line / braid, just to put the odds on my side.

What SS said. Fast to Xfast is perfect for sp fishing.

You will find that a shorter rod is better suited as it puts more pressure on the fish, compared to a longer rod. You can put 8lb braid on a 1000 size reel(depending on braid diameter), as long as you adjust your drag pressure accordingly, you wont have any problems.

I use PE 0.6 on one of my outfits, which breaks at 10lbs on a 1-2kg rod.

For light fishing, 1-3kg rod with 4 to 6lb braid is more than enough mate. Unless you want to chase jewies or snappers off the boat.

That's the confusing part of all this, some rods sound great on paper but when I've gone in to handle it in person at the shop, I have been disappointed with the action, that's one reason I seldom buy rods online, reels no problem but rods are a very personal thing, I'll take your advise though and go for a fast tapered rod, this is a learning curve for me, I've been fishing since I wore green sleeves so that's about 45 plus years, trying to teach an old dog new tricks and all.
